Twenty minutes outside of our beautiful town of Newland, NC is the city of Banner Elk. Known as the “Culinary Hot Spot of the High Country”, Banner Elk provides great food options for groups of all ages. Within the city of Banner Elk is a festival unlike any other: the Woolly Worm Festival. Designed as a weather prediction ceremony, the festival is held every third weekend in October and has stood the test of time since its creation in the 1970s.
Join us as we discuss the Woolly Worm Festival and what makes these creatures unique!
According to local folklore, farmers used woolly worms to predict the weather, helping them determine which crops to plant that season. In the late 1970s, Jim Morton, an editor for the Mountain Living Magazine, was writing about the beloved Woolly Worm and its history.
As time passed, Morton concluded that there were too many worms with varying patterns, and some specific process was needed to determine which worm would have the honor of predicting the weather.
The festival was created in 1978, along with a formal process to choose the winning worm. It has grown to include crowds of over 20,000, making it a highlight every year for the Banner Elk area.
But, what exactly occurs during the festival and how does one even read a woolly worm? Let’s learn more about reading woolly worms and what happens during this quirky and beloved event.
According to local folklore, each ring on the worm corresponds to a week of the winter season and the ring's color would indicate the weather for that week. More dark rings on the worm indicate a harsher winter season with below-average temperatures.
Also, the appropriately named "wooly worm" is not actually a worm but a caterpillar that eventually transforms into a Tiger Moth. Also known as a “woolly bear,” these caterpillars are hatched in warm weather and spend their winters hiding under leaves or bark. When the season starts to melt into Spring, the woolly worms spin their cocoons and emerge as Tiger Moths.
Below are some of the main attraction points for the Woolly Worm Festival, and what makes it a sight you cannot miss!
Bring your own worm and compete for it to have the honor of predicting winter! This three-foot length of string race is the main highlight of the festival. Not only does the winner receive bragging rights, but $1,000 is also given to the owner of the winning worm.
Each race heat includes 25 worms and starts at 10:00 a.m., and concludes around 4:00 p.m. After the races finish, everyone gathers for the grand finale. Although Saturday’s race is the deciding one, participants can bring their worms on Sunday for an additional race for smaller prizes.
Local artisans and crafters gather during this festival to display their often handmade pieces. Not only is it an opportunity to pick up great souvenirs, but it also helps support local businesses and talent. Food trucks and stalls are also available, providing a range of treats. Whether it is apple cider, cornbread or barbecue, it is something you cannot afford to miss!
